It is 2024! Can you believe it?? And this is the first episode of the year! No, I am not going to talk about New Year’s Resolutions or goal setting. While I do think goal setting is important, that is not what I want to focus on today. Today is something better, my darling. Today is something that could help you set goals, or maybe focus on YOUR goals and where you are headed for this year.
Here is some backstory on where the title of this podcast comes from. Before my wedding last year, like I would say most brides, I was trying to lose some extra inches. This is a trick for me because I love sweets. And at times, comfort food. I knew I would be somewhat better at this attempt since I had a goal with the wedding. If I don’t have something I am working towards when it comes to weight loss and getting in shape, it is very difficult for me to stick with it. Anyway, my husband and I were talking about this one day and I cannot remember if I saw it somewhere or if he did, but one of us read or heard someone say that when they see a sweet treat or something that could derail their diet they say, “That’s not mine.” And if they have to keep walking by it, they repeat that, or you can change it up and say “It’s not mine.” I remember thinking at the time, oh, that’s clever because generally if something is not ours, we won’t take it or eat it. It would be like eating Susan’s lunch out of the fridge. How rude! I did use this tactic before the wedding and I will say it did help! Like with most things though, you do need to truly believe that statement. If you don’t believe it, then there is no way it would work for you. You have to truly believe that the treat is for someone else, or grabbing one would be easy.
No, this is not about getting healthy in the New Year either! Here is how I want you to use this statement this year. Sometimes we might look at other people’s lives and compare our lives to theirs. I am not saying everyone does this or that we do it all of the time. I am simply saying that it can be hard to witness the glorious lives of Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, or whatever social media platform you follow. I know we’ve discussed comparisons before and how dangerous they can be, so I want you to remember this statement. “That’s not mine.”
Just like with the cookies and bars, those lives aren’t yours! Why do you want that life so bad if it isn’t yours? I realize you might say, “Well, Mandi, they take vacations, they have a bigger house, they seem happier than me, and on and on and on.” To that, I say, “So what, that’s not mine.” There are a few different ways to deal with this feeling, IF you have it. Maybe you are one of those people who never have that feeling of, hey why don’t I have that, and that’s amazing. And let me be clear, I am not saying that you shouldn’t ever look at something and want it, because how else do we know if we don’t see that thing? Or life? I am just saying, don’t let it eat you up and use it to your advantage instead of to your detriment. So, here are a few ways I want you to use this feeling.
- You are going to start with saying “That’s not mine, but….”
And then use this but…but… - But….how can I use that to fuel my passion?
- How can I use this to focus and be grateful for what I have and for what is mine? Trust me, there is always, always something to be grateful for. Did you wake up this morning? Praise Jesus. Do you have hot water! Hallelujah on these cold winter days. Toothpaste? Sweet! I mean, your list is endless. On a daily basis I am thankful for the small things, like toilet paper! Think of that feeling when you’re using the restroom and there is an empty roll next to you…dreadful. And then how happy you feel when you can reach the spare roll? Grateful!!
- Next, that’s not mine, but…how did they do that? You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. That is why there are Master classes, to TEACH you how to do these things so you can build what YOU want. You can build YOUR life, so it is yours. I am confident that you can find a class or video to teach you anything and everything you will need to start, continue, finish whatever it is you want to do. That is the beauty of the time we are in right now – you can learn a new skill if you want to. You just have to be willing to put in the time and figure it out.
There is one other way this statement works. Many times it can feel like or seem like we are supposed to want something. Let me use my world as an example of this. I am currently a Senior Director of Marketing at my company. It seems like I should want to keep climbing the corporate ladder and keep getting promotions and aspiring to other roles that society will tell me ‘you’ve made it.’ But guess what, it is okay to say ‘that’s not mine.’ I don’t have to want that. I don’t have to want a job that has me traveling every other week, working late evenings, or stressing me out. Flip side, it is completely okay to want that too! And then use the steps above to get there. What I am trying to say, it is okay to choose what is yours, and make it yours. Given, if it is God’s will it will be so much easier and like a freight train, but that is a whole other podcast! Use the statement “that’s not mine” in whatever way you need to to help you fuel your passion and accomplish your dreams. Your dreams, God’s will for you, not anyone else’s dreams or expectations. One spin around this world…make it what you want, and to the rest say, “that’s not mine.”
