Happy Independence Day Weekend! I love this weekend and everything it stands for. This podcast is all about taking advantage of all our opportunities in this country because of our independence and freedoms. So I ask you, “are you living your life with a due sense of responsibility?”

Welcome back to the Something Better, My Darling podcast. I am here to help women find their purpose without compromising their values, and ultimately reaching their full potential. Whether you are struggling with self worth, confidence, or lack of taking action, this is for you! I am so excited you are here! I can’t wait to get to know you!
This past weekend I had the amazing opportunity to spend time with my girlfriends from college. We went to Nashville! I love country music so this was definitely a place for me. Being that we were there the week before the 4th of July we heard Martina McBrides song, “Independence Day” a few times. Ha! And today as I walked Pepper, our puppy, and thinking about this podcast the song kept playing in my head. The chorus:
Let freedom ring, let the white dove sing
Let the whole world know that today
Is a day of reckoning.
Let the weak be strong, let the right be wrong
Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay
It’s Independence Day.
One particular phrase in here hit me today. Let the weak be strong. Isn’t that what independence day is all about? Our freedom for the weak to be strong. For everyone to have a voice? No matter their skin color, their gender or non-gender. Then I had a deep sense of gratitude wash over me. How lucky am I that I was born into the United States. Born into a country that celebrates Independence Day and, as a female, I can drive. I can vote. I can work outside of the home. I can get divorced and not be completely ostracized by society! I can start a business. I can pray in the middle of a restaurant. I can go to whichever church I want to on Sunday. I can have a cross on my house. I can walk down the street with my head held high. I am a single mom who owns a home, works full-time outside of a home, has a side business which I love with all my soul, drives to work, can color my hair pink if I’d like, and guess what else? I can invest in the stock market, own additional properties, and build a life that we all deserve. This gets me worked up in a good way! In an exciting way. You will hear me say time and time again, ‘who am I to tell God that I am not going to live to my full potential.’ He gave me life. He gave me a purpose, and who am I to say no to God??’ The verse that is on my heart today is this: “Live life with a due sense of responsibility, not as those who do not know the meaning of life, but as those who do.” Ephesians 5:15. With a due sense of responsibility! It is my responsibility. Your responsibility to live the life God gave us to the fullest!! And, because of our freedom, we can! How amazing is that!! Sarah Blakely, the founder of Spanx said in an interview with Tony Robbins when asked why she wanted to start her own business, that she did it because she could. Because in our generation, we can, where before women couldn’t. It is OUR responsibility to take these opportunities and make the most of them. They are right there! Why are you sitting there and not using them?! Please know that as my heart races talking about this, I say this to myself when I get in a rut and start to be ‘meh.’ Yes, we all have bad days, but we can’t quit! We just can’t. What if all those years ago women would have stopped pushing for women’s rights?? Where would we be today? Don’t quit. You can pause, take a break, but then please pick yourself up and keep going! It is your responsibility. It is my responsibility. Think of all of the men and women who have fought so hard to get us our independence. Do we not owe it to them? I think we do.
It is Independence Day weekend, and yes that means an extra day off and time with friends and family. BBQ’s and sun. It also means that many people before us, many generations before us lived their life with a ‘due sense of responsibility’ so we could be where we are today. I’m pushing you today to stop and take some time to think about what you CAN do because of your independence and if you are truly taking advantage of everything that this world and life has to offer you. If you aren’t? Why not? Why not?! What is stopping you? Okay, that last question might not be fair…it is loaded and leads us down a rabbit hole of fear, self-doubt, and a bunch of other stuff. LOL. But for today or this weekend. Think about taking every opportunity that you can, simply because of your Independence. I don’t ever want to look my children in the eyes and tell them that I didn’t try. That I didn’t do everything in my power to live my life with a ‘due sense of responsibility’ to God, to them, to society, to those who do not have the opportunities we have…all because of Independence! I just love this weekend and everything it means, and I hope you do too! Enjoy your weekend and be safe and then next week, if you’re not taking advantage of all your freedoms and opportunities, please start!! Don’t wait another day to start living with a ‘due sense of responsibility!’
